Marine News, August 19, 2013: The ILO, or International Labour Organization, has compiled a detailed guide for MLC 2006, or Maritime Labour Convention 2006, which is scheduled to come into force from August 20, 2013.
Also called the Seafarers’ Bill of Rights, MLC 2006, lays down the minimum standard for working and living conditions for seafarers on board any vessel. More than 45 ILO member states have ratified the Maritime Labour Convention 2006. According to ILO’s website, these member states are “responsible for regulating conditions for seafarers on more than 75 per cent of the world’s gross tonnage of ships”.
