Marine News, August 9, 2013: After a long and complex process, the UK has ratified Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), 2006. The new convention, under the aegis of the International Labour Organization (ILO), collates and updates over 68 standards for working conditions in the shipping industry.

The MLC 2006 sets minimum standards for the living and working conditions for seafarers. These are global employment standards reflect the significant contribution made by the ILO to protect the basic rights of seafarers.

The process of ratification was long and complex, more so because it involved several government departments. The ratification is aimed at removing obstacles to regional trade and ensuring that all vessels comply with internationally agreed upon standards.
